The signal only goes one way, from the combo to the HDTV. There is no signal going from the HDTV to the combo, that's why you need an external tuner.
You connect the antenna line (via a splitter) to the external tuner. Usually you would use composite cables (Yellow/Red/White) to connect the external tuner output to the combo's inputs.
